The Excluded Entity: Organic Resolution and Compositional Suppression in Google AI Overview

The Excluded Entity is a case study by Lee Sharks on differences between organic Google results and Google AI Mode composition.

Three captures motivate the category Entity-Level Compositional Suppression. In the first, an ambiguous name query resolves entirely to another entity. In the second, the system discusses the target’s retrieval problem using general sources but cites none of the target’s own work. In the third, a title-exact query shows the target work in the first three ordinary results while the AI Overview cites unrelated or less direct substitutes.

The paper proposes the Composition Divergence Index to compare organic target resolution with target presence in the generated source panel. It also specifies control queries, repeated testing, feedback logging, and cross-platform comparison.

The evidence is a small, author-involved case series. It demonstrates that the documented outputs occurred; it does not prove intent, universality, or the exact internal mechanism that produced them.
