Heteronymic Typology is a formal classification paper in the Pessoa Knowledge Graph series. It is designed to preserve distinctions that are often lost when heteronyms, pseudonyms, personae, and fictional authors are treated as interchangeable.
The typology contains six principal classes. The orthonym is the author’s own name functioning as a literary voice; the heteronym is a fully differentiated authorial figure; the semi-heteronym is only partly differentiated; the proto-heteronym is an early precursor; the para-heteronym performs second-order translation, criticism, or commentary inside the system; and the pseudonym substitutes a name without constructing an independent authorial position. The paper provides tests for assigning each class.
The work then translates the typology into a proposed knowledge-graph schema and tests its reach beyond Pessoa. It distinguishes strict heteronymy from adjacent practices and supports qualified classification for uncertain cases. Its importance to the PKG is infrastructural: graph relations and queries cannot preserve Pessoa’s system unless the authorial types remain separate. Specific Wikidata identifiers and broad comparative classifications are proposals that require ongoing scholarly and technical verification.
