The Thousand Dollar Sharpie: Signature as Compressed Portraiture on U.S. Currency

The Thousand Dollar Sharpie is EA-TDS-01, the center panel and doctrinal anchor of a three-part series within the Moving Statues Made of Rubies Mint cluster. The paper begins from a reported convergence on March 26, 2026: a Treasury announcement concerning a presidential signature on future U.S. paper currency and a public monologue about custom Sharpie markers. It also places the event in a wider history of presidential branding and the earlier use of Sharpie as an instrument of representational overwriting. Its central thesis is compressed portraiture. The work argues that a personal signature on a public monetary substrate can perform the same political and semiotic work as a portrait while avoiding a prohibition framed at the level of visual medium. The signature repeatedly circulates a personal authority claim through ordinary exchange. The paper’s legal analysis traces the 1866 “portrait or likeness” language, later statutory wording, and the historical chain of Treasurer and Treasury Secretary signatures.
