The work begins with a documentary uncertainty notice. Its factual nucleus—the companion record’s account of a Treasury announcement and same-day Sharpie speech—is external to the fiction. The subsequent history is invented. The narrative imagines the first new bills entering circulation, followed by citizens applying black Sharpie over the presidential signature.
The blot moves through phases. It begins as scattered protest, becomes merchant etiquette, acquires talismanic or cleansing associations, and eventually functions as a citizen-applied social authentication mark. Unblotted bills are not necessarily rejected; they begin to look unfinished, as though a public text still carries an unresolved interpolation.
The narrative’s economic logic is deliberately modest. A preference for blotted notes could make them move more quickly and create the appearance of enhanced circulation. The folk interpretation is stronger: the blot returns branded money to anonymous common medium. The work holds both explanations without claiming a real movement occurred.
A retrocausal anomaly then places blotted older-series notes in collections where their marks appear to predate the movement. The conventional explanation—later alteration of older notes—is sufficient. The speculative explanation is “provenance collapse,” in which a dense future object appears to have populated its own past. The text explicitly refuses to endorse this as a physical mechanism. Documentary uncertainty is the fiction’s operative condition.
