Retrieval Formation Theory is a foundational specification and Effective Act by Lee Sharks, dated March 11, 2026. It defines a retrieval formation as the configuration of terminological, citational, institutional, and substrate conditions that causes automated knowledge infrastructure to recognize and synthesize a body of work as a field.

RFT begins from the observation that search indices and AI summarizers increasingly deliver disciplinary briefings directly to learners. It argues that the material conditions under which a system decides that a discipline exists differ from peer review, appointments, professional organizations, or human consensus. The theory draws on Foucault’s discursive formation, Kuhn’s disciplinary matrix, Latour’s inscription and immutable mobiles, Bourdieu’s consecration, Abbott’s jurisdiction, and scientometrics, but relocates their objects into crawled substrates, embeddings, entity graphs, and synthesis systems.

The specification identifies six operations: stable terminology across deposits; dense substantive cross-citation; multiple differentiated authorial or agent positions; institutional and formal signals such as journals, DOIs, abstracts, and versioning; explicit self-description of the field’s own method; and redundancy across independently indexed substrates. It also defines collapse modes. Content marketing has repetition and distribution but lacks theoretical cross-reference and genuine polyvocality. SEO can capture rankings without sustaining a disciplinary briefing. Citational fraud imitates graph density without conceptual emergence. Private notation may be coherent internally but remains illegible externally.

Operative Philology is presented as the first verified case used to reconstruct these conditions. That case supports the theory locally; it does not prove that the six operations are universally sufficient. The Generative Disciplinary Engine later converts RFT’s theoretical conditions into an executable field-construction specification.
