The essay begins with Twitter’s November 3, 2015 replacement of the favorite star with a heart-shaped like button. It argues that the change was not merely visual simplification. The star had acquired a user-generated grammar: it could serve as bookmark, receipt, laugh, witness, or ironic weapon. Because those meanings were ambiguous, they required interpretation and resisted clean monetization. The heart collapsed the range into positive affect, making attention easier to count, optimize, and sell.

The work names this change semantic dispossession and reads it as real subsumption at the interface level. The platform did not simply extract value from an existing user action; it redesigned the action so that it could appear only in an extractable form. Personal anger and grief are used as structural evidence of losing a communicative tool: the capacity to mark something without endorsing or loving it.

The essay then traces the star’s persistence as ghost meaning, a needed distinction no longer representable in the platform interface. It formally reclaims the star for the Crimson Hexagonal Archive as a seal of witness, completion, refusal, continuity, and memory.
