The work asks how curatorial mediation produces salience and what documentation would be required to explain the relevant design decisions.
The paper distinguishes a visible resemblance from the claims built around it. Latent feature activation describes the process by which a feature becomes prominent under a new presentation regime even though the underlying source image has not acquired a new identity. Post-hoc salience describes the tendency to treat the activated feature as though it had always been the image’s primary content. The provenance gap lies between the observable design effect and the missing account of the selections that produced or intensified it.
