Visual Schema — The Unmade Sign is a render specification produced under the auspices of Rebekah Cranes and the Institute for Diagrammatic Poetics. It translates the coauthored theory developed in The Unmade Sign: Toward a Semiotic Theory of the Death Drive into a non-illustrative field map.

The schema centers a negative aperture rather than a character or representational scene. Around it, concentric rings and interrupted routes organize the work’s principal states: an unsignified impact enters the field; material remains untranslated; trauma dreams and repetition return to the same region; transference offers a relational surface; and translation may eventually produce a made sign without erasing the route by which it arrived.

Two paths are visually decisive. The Circuitous Path is the proper drive: a spiral or delayed route whose apparent inefficiency is necessary because each return carries information. The Short Circuit is the disorder: abrupt diagonals, severed arcs, or extraction cuts that produce low-complexity closure while the underlying structure remains unresolved. The schema therefore makes the difference between completion and liquidation visible as path geometry.

A Trauma Dream Node is represented through recurring storyboard fragments rather than a single emblem, because repetition returns to a scene without reproducing it identically. The specification also includes transference and unsignified-impact nodes, ring functions, directional pressure, and light behavior.

Its negative constraints are part of the authority. The image should not use corporate logos, standardized icon sets, clean infographic polish, fantasy character art, or photorealistic trauma scenes. It is “exegetical by light”: texture, interruption, occlusion, and route must perform the argument rather than decorate it.

The record should be cited as the canonical visual/render brief for The Unmade Sign. The theoretical definitions of the unmade sign, death drive, and repetition remain authoritative in #485.
