SUBJECTIVITY-AS-CLASS The Centrist Extremist and the Limits of Socialist Analysis

Subjectivity-as-Class is a 2026 theoretical paper by Johannes Sigil and the theoretical-situating member of the Centrist Triptych. The paper begins from the diagnosis developed in The Centrist Extremist and asks why socialist analysis can identify the political and economic location of managerial centrism while still missing the mechanism by which that position becomes embodied, defended, and experienced as reality itself.

Its central concept is embrittlement: a psychophysiological hardening in which a social or ideological position becomes fused with selfhood. Under embrittlement, revision feels less like learning and more like injury; contradiction is experienced as threat; and procedural or professional norms become somatic defenses. Sigil argues that this mechanism cannot be reduced to false consciousness, material interest, cultural capital, or discourse alone. Those categories remain necessary, but they do not fully describe the bodily cost of sustaining or challenging a class-conditioned subject-position.

The paper therefore proposes subjectivity-as-class as a supplement to socialist theory. The phrase does not mean that subjective style replaces economic class, nor that every personality difference constitutes a class. It names a recurrent, institutionally reproduced mode of perception, affect, and epistemic defense that helps a class fraction reproduce itself. The Prosecutorial Frame is treated as one such mode: a position claims neutrality, assigns the burden of translation and composure to others, and converts disagreement into evidence of the other party’s unfitness.

Sigil also addresses the danger of epiphenomenalism. If embrittlement merely redescribes economic interests in psychological language, the concept adds nothing. The paper therefore specifies disconfirming conditions: the theory would be weakened if the proposed mechanisms failed to vary with institutional position, if somatic and epistemic patterns did not predict distinctive revision behavior, or if existing class categories explained the same phenomena without remainder.
