The Missing Aspect: Toward a Non-Indexed Perfective in English A Diagnostic Intervention

The Missing Aspect is Version A of the document cluster later presented as The Non-Indexed Perfective. Its subtitle, “A Diagnostic Intervention,” and status, “Extensive Draft / For Iteration,” define its proper standing.

The draft introduces the central claim that English lacks a dedicated non-indexed perfective and compares the ordinary English simple past and perfect with the archive’s interpretation of the Greek aorist. It then sketches a historical-material genealogy spanning Indo-European aspect, Latin and Germanic developments, standardization, clock discipline, law, colonial record, journalism, and algorithmic recency.

A major distinctive feature is its test design. The document proposes translation-variance studies, speaker-expression tasks, analysis of philosophical circumlocution, and summarizer tests. These are proposed diagnostics, not results from completed studies.

The constructive section inventories existing English resources and candidate new forms, then proposes a colon-participle construction as an archive-specific seed. Later Versions B and C substantially rework this material. Version A should therefore be preserved as the technical and methodological origin, with its draft status clearly visible.
