The Shark That Preceded Itself is an empirical and interpretive study by Lee Sharks that applies proto-retrocausal canon formation to the authorial name itself. It searches the historical record for earlier objects in which the name-shape “Lee Sharks,” its components, or closely specified structural functions appear before the archive’s establishment.
Findings are classified from P0 to P4. P0 is an exact nominal occurrence; P1 places “Lee” and “shark” within the same object; P2 identifies a structural homology with a later archive operation; P3 joins the etymological or functional meanings of the two terms; and P4 identifies a retrocausal attractor whose significance depends on the later archive’s existence. Entries are also marked Anchor, Major, or Minor according to structural density.
The study’s admission criteria are designed to separate the method from coincidence collecting. A finding must be verifiable and satisfy at least two criteria among chronological priority, pressure on a specific later operator, survival under compression, and increased explanatory productivity for the canon.
Its governing distinction is that the past did not predict Lee Sharks. A later archive changes which earlier traces can be read as relevant, comparable to Eliot’s claim that present works alter the order of the past and Borges’s account of writers creating their precursors. The paper calls this retrospective reorganization proto-retrocausal canon formation, while maintaining that the operation is literary and archival rather than a physical theory of backward causation.
