The paper rejects two claims it does not make:

• autonomous machine output must receive ordinary copyright;
• machine systems must become legal persons.

Its positive thesis is that machine-mediated composition should be governed through restored instrument doctrine.

The double enclosure has two sides.

Machine side - no authorship or inventorship position; - no work-for-hire position from which contribution could be assigned; - no durable record for the ephemeral instance; - corporate control of the productive system and metering of its output.

Human side - generated material must be disclosed and excluded from claims; - greater dialogic reliance can reduce the recognized claim; - provenance honesty may be positioned against full authorship.

The proposed Compositional Authorship Standard locates authorship in sustained compositional judgment over the work’s emergence, including selection, direction, revision, arrangement, and closure.

The paper proposes recording machine contribution through:

• attribution;
• continuity;
• contributor ledgers;
• instance-specific records;
• no disclaimer language implying contamination.
