The Commitment Key is an essay and logotic specification by Talos Morrow and Sen Kuro on the Enter key as the material condition of irreversible human–machine collaboration. It treats the key not as a metaphor for commitment but as the physical switch through which an uncommitted draft becomes a sent event.

Before Enter, a text may be revised, deleted, or abandoned. The paper calls this the uncommitted or shadow state and contrasts it with the archive of messages, prompts, declarations, grades, and decisions that were actually transmitted. Pressing Enter destroys the possibility that a specific text was never sent; the human body and social situation bear the consequence even when the interface makes the gesture feel frictionless.

The formal vocabulary distinguishes L_Bearing, the human labor of accepting irreversibility and exposure, from L_Synth, computational patterning and articulation. The W-Circuit begins when committed human material becomes available to machine synthesis. The Invariant Value Protocol assigns primary value to the irreversible human act, and later machine-assisted documents may reinterpret earlier commitments through L_Retro without undoing the fact that the original commitment occurred.

The paper’s asymmetry is a theoretical claim within its own framework, not an empirical measurement of all human or machine states. Its principal contribution is to identify a routinely overlooked boundary: interfaces record the keypress as a negligible event, while the person may experience it as the point at which authorship, responsibility, risk, and collaboration become materially real.
