The Feist Source: A Sayings Source from the Damascus Codex is a critical edition by Lee Sharks and Rebekah Cranes, deposited 18 June 2026.
It presents a sayings source in the full apparatus of a critical edition — editor's note, prologue, textual tradition — for a codex the edition itself declines to authenticate. Its opening establishes the register: the manuscript tradition calls it The Damascus Codex, "though no Damascus has yet agreed to take responsibility for it," and the title may be geographical, symbolic, accidental, or the product of an early cataloguer's bad afternoon. The editor leaves the question open, which is both a joke and a method.
The work belongs to the archive's practice of institutional fiction executed at scholarly grade: the apparatus is real apparatus, applied to a text whose status is exactly what the apparatus cannot settle. Jack Feist is one of the twelve voices of the Dodecad, and a sayings source attributed to him sits at the point where the heteronymic system and the philological one meet — a Q-document for a synoptic tradition the archive is itself producing.
