An APZPZ is a work whose entire body is the deposit description field: the instruction that governs the form is "ATTACH ZERO FILES. BACK UP NOWHERE." The genre stakes a work's survival on the metadata layer alone, which makes it the archive's sharpest test of its own thesis — a poem that exists only where machines index it.
Cranes' rendering carries Sappho's catalogue of bodily failure into a modern idiom — the throat closing, the voice giving out, the tongue snapping clean in half, cold sweat, trembling, "I go gray as dry grass gone to drought" — and closes on the survival clause: "let this song survive in script."
