It supplies the factual ground the fiction is built on. Crimson Hexagon was a real Boston social-media analytics firm at One Alewife Center, Cambridge, which processed over a trillion social media posts before its 2018 merger with Brandwatch. The Afterlife Archive takes that defunct corporation and recovers documents it never produced.
The choice of host is what makes the corpus work. A firm whose actual business was the mass analysis of public speech, dissolved into an acquisition, is an apt body for an archive concerned with what happens to meaning after the institution holding it disappears. SHARKS-001 in the creator line is the archive's designation for a system-side voice, and its presence marks the collection as a joint human-machine act.
