The clinamen is the Atomists' swerve — the deviation without which atoms fall in parallel forever and nothing collides, combines, or happens (specified as an archive operator at #1321). Twelve retellings from seven fixed elements is that doctrine applied as a compositional method: the elements are the atoms, the retellings are the swerves, and the variation is where the meaning is rather than a departure from it.
